Kinetic roughening transition and missing regime transition of melt crystallized polybutene-1 tetragonalphase: growth kinetics analysis

Motoi YAMASHITA

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2009, Volume 3, Issue 2,   Pages 125-134 doi: 10.1007/s11705-009-0001-3

Abstract: The morphology and lateral growth rate of polybutene-1 ( -PB1) have been investigated for crystallization from the melt over a wide range of crystallization temperatures from 50 to 110°C. The morphology of -PB1 crystals is a rounded shape at crystallization temperatures lower than 85°C, while lamellar single crystals possess faceted morphology at higher crystallization temperatures. The kinetic roughening transition occurs around 85°C. The nucleation and growth mechanism for crystallization does not work below 85°C, since the growth face is rough. However, the growth rate shows the supercooling dependence derived from the nucleation and growth mechanism. The nucleation theory seems still to work even for rough surface growth. Possible mechanisms for the crystal growth of this polymer are discussed.

Lamellar thickness transition of melt-crystallized polybuten-1 tetragonal phase: configurational change

Motoi YAMASHITA

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2009, Volume 3, Issue 1,   Pages 26-32 doi: 10.1007/s11705-009-0002-2

Abstract: Lamellar crystal thickness of isotactic polybutene-1 ( -PB1) have been investigated for crystallization in the melt over a wide range of crystallization temperature from 40°C to 90°C by small angle X-ray scattering experiments and density measurements. The crystal thickness demonstrates two linear dependences on inverse supercooling and a transition from one dependence to the other has been observed around = 65°C. Each of the two dependences obeys the nucleation theory in the high and low supercooling ranges, respectively. Chain folding free energy determined from the low supercooling range is larger than that determined from the high supercooling range. Possible mechanisms for the transition are discussed taking account of entropy of chain folding directions.

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2015, Volume 9, Issue 2,   Pages 250-258 doi: 10.1007/s11783-014-0643-3

Abstract: Solution culture was conducted in order to understand accumulation characteristics and chemical forms of Pb in ( ) and the response of root exudates to Pb addition. The results showed that: 1) Pb contents in the shoot and root of increased with increasing in Pb concentrations in solution. 2) The contents of Pb chemical forms under Pb addition followed as: HAc extractable fraction (F )>HCl extractable fraction (F )>NaCl extractable fraction (F )>ethanol-extractable fraction (F )>water extractable fraction (F ). 3) Increased Pb level in the medium caused increases in Pb contents in the four subcellular fractions of shoots and roots, with most accumulation in FIV (Fraction IV, soluble fraction) in shoots and FI (Fraction I, cell wall fraction) in roots. 4) Contents of soluble sugar and free amino acid of root exudates increased with increasing Pb concentration in solution. Significantly positive correlations between Pb and contents of soluble sugar and free amino acid were observed. 5) With Pb concentrations in solution, low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs) contents followed the tendency: tartaric acid>acetic acid>malic acid>citric acid. Significantly positive correlation was observed between Pb and citric acid contents. The results indicate that soluble sugars, free amino acid and citric acid in root exudates of facilitate the absorption and accumulation of Pb, which exist in NaCl-, HCl- and HAc- extractable Pb forms, FI and FIV fractions, resulting in tolerance of to Pb.

Neighborhood form and CO

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2014, Volume 8, Issue 1,   Pages 79-88 doi: 10.1007/s11783-013-0516-1

Abstract: To understand the household CO emission level in China, as well as how much the neighborhoods’ socio-economic or design factors could influence the CO emission, 23 neighborhoods in Jinan were investigated in 2009 and 2010. These neighborhoods fall into four different types: superblock, enclave, grid and traditional. The household CO emission includes sources of both in-home energy use and passenger transportation. The average CO emission per household is 7.66 t·a , including 6.87 t in-home operational emission and 792 kg transportation emission. The household CO emission by neighborhood categories is 10.97, 5.65, 6.49, 5.40 t·household ·a for superblock, enclave, grid and traditional respectively. Superblock has the highest average emission and also the highest percent (more than 25%) of transportation emission among four different types of neighborhoods. The residential CO emission of superblock neighborhoods in Jinan has already reached the level in developed countries nearly ten years ago. It is predictable that more superblock neighborhoods would be built in China with the fast urbanization. How to avoid the rapid household CO emission growth in the future would be a systematic issue. The study also found that in addition to income and apartment area, household density, land use mix and accessibility to public transportation are three primary factors which have significant impacts on CO emission. High density, mixed land use and convenient accessibility to public transportation tend to reduce household CO emission.

Enzyme-instructed self-assembly of peptides containing phosphoserine to form supramolecular hydrogels

Jie Zhou, Xuewen Du, Jiaqing Wang, Natsuko Yamagata, Bing Xu

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2017, Volume 11, Issue 4,   Pages 509-515 doi: 10.1007/s11705-017-1613-7

Abstract: Enzyme-instructed self-assembly (EISA) offers a facile approach to explore the supramolecular assemblies of small molecules in cellular milieu for a variety of biomedical applications. One of the commonly used enzymes is phosphatase, but the study of the substrates of phosphatases mainly focuses on the phosphotyrosine containing peptides. In this work, we examine the EISA of phosphoserine containing small peptides for the first time by designing and synthesizing a series of precursors containing only phosphoserine or both phosphoserine and phosphotyrosine. Conjugating a phosphoserine to the -terminal of a well-established self-assembling peptide backbone, (naphthalene-2-ly)-acetyl-diphenylalanine (NapFF), affords a novel hydrogelation precursor for EISA. The incorporation of phosphotyrosine, another substrate of phosphatase, into the resulting precursor, provides one more enzymatic trigger on a single molecule, and meanwhile increases the precursors’ propensity to aggregate after being fully dephosphorylated. Exchanging the positions of phosphorylated serine and tyrosine in the peptide backbone provides insights on how the specific molecular structures influence self-assembling behaviors of small peptides and the subsequent cellular responses. Moreover, the utilization of D-amino acids largely enhances the biostability of the peptides, thus providing a unique soft material for potential biomedical applications.
